A Research Assistant post is available to be filled immediately in the Peer to Peer Deaf Multiliteracies project, implemented by the Rural Lifeline Trust in Binika, Odisha,

This is a full-time post with a salary of Rs25000-Rs. 30,000 per month, and the successful applicant will be required to move to Odisha. The research site is at the Happy Hands School for the Deaf in the village of Sindurpur near Binika, District Subarnapur.

The initial appointment, which is also the probation period, is for six months (Sep 2019– Feb 2020), and is renewable afterwards for a further period between six months and 18 months. Renewal of the contract is subject to approval by the project team.

Job description

To assist a deaf team with implementing teaching innovations in classrooms with deaf learners;

To work independently with learners in the classroom, under the supervision of experienced teachers;

To translate Indian Sign Language video recordings into written English, including ISL texts with professional and academic content;

To work with a research team on the compilation and organisation of research data;

To analyse and interpret research data, and write up summaries, with guidance from experienced researchers;

To undertake work in ISL-English interpreting and voice-over (in case of hearing applicants only);

To undertake any other tasks commensurate with the role, as directed by team leaders.

Required skills and experience

Excellent skills in Indian Sign Language (ISL)

Excellent skills in written English, including translations from ISL to English, and academic writing

The ability to self-organise several work streams and keep to deadlines

High level of IT skills, including the common Microsoft applications, ICT, and familiarity with picture editing software

Fast learner and adaptable to new and challenging work contexts

Ability to work smoothly in teams, both face-to-face and through remote communication

Desirable skills and experience

Formal or informal teaching experience, preferably in a context with deaf learners

Motivation to work in a team with deaf colleagues

Competency in graphics and video editing software

Experience with sign language interpreting, in particular voice-over (in case of hearing applicants only)
